Life Right Now - Part 1 "You become what you think about"

School feels like a stick shift car awkwardly trying to go from 4th to 6th gear. Meaning, it’s plausible, but not quite possible. And therefore it is also a slower process than just briefly going into 5th gear and then into 6th. I’m trying to get words on papers, my eyes on blackboards and my hands in a laboratory. I’m going to the Marine Science Center tomorrow, Tuesday, to meet Francis. He is in charge of research. I have wanted to do research in Marine Biology for a very long time, and tomorrow that idea, that dream will come true. I try not to set too high expectations, because then if I don’t like it I can easily try something else.

And then there’s my photo class. Which poses different photographic challenges than those I encountered throwing myself into a journalistic photographer’s position in high school for 2 years. These challenges feel confusing because they are organizational in ways I have never tried before. In a school newspaper you don’t think about the fact that you’re taking a “depth of field” photo. You take it because it conveys the story of a particular article, in one photo, or at least attempts to. In photo class, I am currently trying to figure out what exactly, and artistically, a “leading lines” photo is. I can ask my teacher what exactly it is. But I have to figure out myself what it is artistically.

I read an interesting quote this morning in my “Monday Motivation” group chat. “‘You become what you think about’ - Abraham Lincoln.” I have never heard this quote before. Maybe that’s because I’m still closer to have lived 4/5 of my life in Denmark and I don’t know too much about American History. But I find this saying very interesting, because the way a person thinks very much reflects that person’s capabilities and not just that person’s interests. So if all I think about is how to be environmentally friendly and how to take that “leading lines” photo, does that mean I will become a National Geographic photographer (like that uncle I have I never met)? Because I would be fine with that... I am gonna be knitting as a side hobby though:)

Lastly, the part of my life that needs fewest words, but says a lot in itself, and that I now trust my wonderful English class with to read: I am still madly in love... been going strong for more than a year and a half now. That's also what I am thinking about. I am happy.

(Responding to Maya's post on being sick here because my commenting function isn't working)

Maya, I feel you. Being sick sucks and I also constantly feel that I am sick like all year round. This could have something to do with my asthma but like I really doing think it could cause me to feel like I have a cold all year... And yes, I definitely do NOT feel CUTE.

Also I love your approach to capturing casual moments in your life so that you don't forget them.

Maybe Shen Yun is a graffiti group that throws posters and stickers on walls? Maybe it's some sort of speak-easy? Might go check it out:)

  1. Caroline! Glad to hear things are going well with you:) I'm going to start investigating home remedies to hopefully cure my eternal sickness -- I'll keep you updated on how it goes and also any further developments with Shen-Yun.

  3. Hey Caroline,

Your bio and photo classes sound really interesting, very different from what I am doing in the Business school. Also, as an international student, I relate to the part about not knowing too much about American history and having people reference to things I do not always understand.

This was nice to read :) we should all be happy and talk about that, it's the kind of positivity that would get us through the cold days.
