Sports :~)

I’m gonna start off right now by saying that this will be a pretty cliche blog post. It’s about the Patriots and the fact that they won the Super Bowl. If you asked me a year ago, I would’ve said I don’t care about the Patriots. Hell, if you had asked me a month ago, I would’ve been like ...who? But now that they’ve won, I care. I know that bandwagon fans are so many people’s pet peeves, but here’s the way I see it. At the Red Sox parade, for example, would you have had as much fun if half as many fans showed up? Or maybe a quarter? Odds are, you wouldn’t have, and that a large percentage of the people who showed up to cheer them on didn’t give two shits about them until they won. That was me. And I’m not even going to even try to deny that. I bought a Red Sox hat at Newbury comics a few weeks before not because it had the B on it for the Red Sox, but because the B was so small and cute that I had to get it because I just like when things are smaller than normal. At the parade, I bought a Red Sox champions shirt from a peddler. Beyond those two items, I don’t think I own any Red Sox memorabilia except this shirt I thrifted back home that says Boston but I’m not even sure if it’s like a Red Sox shirt or just a Boston shirt.
I’ve never been a big sports guy in my life. When I was younger, my parents had me playing soccer and baseball. It didn’t take me long to opt out of baseball, and soccer shortly thereafter. I just truly didn’t enjoy it. Then, when I was in like 6th/7th grade, I joined the swim team at my elementary school. Didn’t enjoy that either. When I was in 8th grade, I believe, I played for my elementary school/junior high’s volleyball team. Unsurprisingly, I gave that up before high school. Then in high school, I didn’t participate in any sports, and I was more than okay with that. My high school wasn’t one that had much school spirit at all (which is part of why I’m excited about going to a college that is arguably very spirited). I could literally count the number of sports games I attended throughout all 4 years of high school on one hand. And I’m okay with that!!! Like I said, I just am not one who cares about sports. But my feelings on sports as a whole change when a major league team wins, like the Red Sox and Patriots this year, or the Cubs last year (because I live in the city of Chicago).

When a big team like the aforementioned wins, it brings with it a huge sense of community and belonging. People take off work, or in our cases, skip classes, just to be with other happy people to get drunk and have a good time together. I went to the Red Sox parade a few months ago and had such a good time. And tomorrow, I’m skipping my mandatory co-op class to go to the Patriots parade. But let’s be honest, if I wasn’t skipping that co-op class tomorrow, I was going to skip one sooner or later. Today I actually walked over to the T.J. Maxx on Newbury Street to go buy some Patriots gear (since I have none) for the parade, but they were out. My friends might have some extra shirts and stuff that I could borrow for the day, but if not, I’ll just show up to the Patriots parade with no Patriots gear on whatsoever. Haha! But, I’m really excited to wake up pretty early and get ready with friends and just have a great time with everyone on such a warm day.
