a reflection on spring break

Howdy --

Spring has sprung and so have I. Or, at least I hope it’s about to spring. I’m super over this whole “winter” thing. But spring break happened and me, being a dumbass, decided to go north. The first weekend of break I went up to the Great North: Burlington, VT. My best friend goes to the University of Vermont so me and another friend from home took a hellish Greyhound up for the weekend. Our bus ended up taking 7 hours to do what should have been a 4 hour drive and by the end was about to erupt into mutiny. But we eventually made it and I got to see my favorite person in the whole world! It was really cool to see where she lived and meet her friends and let me just say that UVM is so very different from Northeastern. For starters, it’s super white. Like 98% white. So white that I could feel people staring at me in the dining hall because it had probably been weeks since they had seen a POC. So that was a little weird but overall Burlington is a lovely city and we got to walk on Lake Champlain because it had frozen over and I got authentic Vermont Ben & Jerry’s. Didn’t see Bernie though, kinda disappointing.

I went home for a couple days but my parents were out of town and I hate the suburbs and being in my house alone was really creepy and cold and none of my friends were home so I decided to just come back to school on Tuesday night.

This past weekend I headed down to New York City to visit a couple friends at Columbia and Barnard. I hadn’t been to New York in a hot minute so it was nice to be back and to get out of Boston for a bit. They were heading right into midterms season so it maybe wasn’t the best time to visit, but we had a blast. I went to the Met by myself on Saturday morning to give them time to study and between that and walking down to the MoMA to meet my friend there, I ended up walking 11 miles. My feet still hurt. Also it turns out that John Mulaney was at the Met at the same time as me but I didn’t see him:( I got to see some incredible art and had some great food and it was so lovely to see my friends. On Sunday morning literally all the trains were down and getting downtown from Morningside Heights was going to be a nightmare so I decided to skip out on my bus and get a ride back from my big big brother who, coincidentally, was in Brooklyn that weekend visiting friends. I had never been to Brooklyn before this weekend but I personally thought it was so much more pleasant than Manhattan. I want to live in New York at some point and I think I would definitely want to live in Brooklyn. That seems to be 500 words so see y’all Wednesday.
Stay woke,
Maya
