Life Updates

So last week was spring break and also my 19th birthday and it was quite the experience. I went home for majority of break and returned to Boston Thursday afternoon. No one was really back yet so I spent the entire Friday alone in Boston for the first time. I ended up walking around Newbury and ended up in the Pru where I was coerced into spending $42 on an eyeshadow palette I didn't even know I needed at Sephora. It's hard to shop alone when you are your own enabler. It was a big mistake and I don't even wear eyeshadow nor do I know how to apply it. Anyways, Saturday was my birthday and Crystal came back finally but we had saved the birthday dinner festivities for Sunday when the rest of my friends were back. After dinner on Sunday, I was convinced to go to a church event that night where I was thrown a surprise party by Crystal and a bunch of my friends. I had never been so surprised in my life and I am not usually easily surprised. I got a freaking Lego architectural set and a film camera which I am soooo excited to use. It was by far one of the best birthdays I have ever had.

Today I went to the writers room to volunteer and it was a slightly different experience than the previous weeks. We worked with a different 9th grade class today and actually went up to their classroom instead of having them come down to the writer's room. They were going over how to write and identify topic sentences in their essays and their teacher had prepared them a worksheet to learn how to do so. He wrote his own essay on a random short story and had the class analyze it and circle the topic sentences he wrote in each body paragraph. Crystal and I couldn't stop laughing because the essay was honestly so bad and my standards are low. He really thought he wrote an amazing essay and he purposely left out the topic sentence in the second body paragraph for the kids to identify. He was so proud of himself when he took the second sentence of that paragraph and copied and pasted it to the beginning, slapped on a transition phrase at the beginning and called it a topic sentence. One of the kids in the back of the class raised their hand and said "actually, I think one of your other sentences at the end of the paragraph would fit better." I couldn't have agreed more, the teacher was clearly hurt but couldn't admit it and tried to move on to the next activity because he had just been straight roasted by one of his own students. We ended up spending the next hour after class doing data entry on some shitty chrome books that were 99% unresponsive but that's honestly the best part of the writer's room. I've never been so enthused about data entry in my life but that is my experience. What a time, what a life.
