So campaign season has officially began, for those of you who didn't know I am a member of the Brown-Nobile campaign. Chris Brown (I know right) is running for student body President and Gabby Nobile is running for executive Vice-President. They're running unopposed and I was curious as to why they were campaigning so hard if there was literally no one to beat them. Them I was told about the no-confidence vote, which is the vote for people who have no confidence in Chris and Gabby's ability to lead. This seemed ludicrous to me because I know Chris and Gabby and I know that they're going to be great for the school, so how could people think about them this way. I learned that some people have such a deep hatred for the Student Government Association that they are actively doing anything in their power to make sure the no-confidence vote goes through. But my question to these people is: do you know what happens when the no-confidence vote wins? If the no-confidence vote wins an Interim President is appointed, this means that instead of a democratically elected official who has detailed their platform we get some person who might not even want the job. Oh and also that person is a member of the Student Government Association, so voting no confidence is not taking power out of the hands of the SGA it's just putting the power into the hands of someone who doesn't want it. Last night I spent from 5 pm to 9 pm dormstorming, which is when I knock on every single dorm on campus and try to talk about the campaign. I wasn't very pushy about it I would just say, "do you have a second to talk about the upcoming election, it's totally okay if not". You would be baffled by the number of people who said they didn't want to hear about the campaign because they, "don't care". How can you not care, these are the people who are responsible for changing and improving campus. If you have even a single complaint about the University (which all of us do) you should care. I thought we lived in a generation of do-ers not a generation of complainers. If people care about the campus they should be electing people who share their views and want to do something about it. They definitely should not be putting power in the hands of someone who doesn't even want it and never asked for it. It just really annoys me because I can see how much Chris and Gabby care and how much effort they're putting in to actually improving Northeastern for all of it's students. But some people just "don't care" or more pointedly they don't understand and just want something to be mad about. Alright that was my political TED talk, thanks for joining me.
Love you,
Cam
