This past Friday, I went to a ballet called Coppelia at the Boston Opera House. In all seriousness, I've never felt fancier in my life. That place just felt fancy. I've never been to a ballet, so I didn't really know how to dress. I just kind of assumed it was a formal occasion. So, I dressed up but didn't dress up too much, you know? I wore a white button down with those new trendy priest collars. I just looked them up. Apparently they're called Mandarin collars. Anyways, I wore that and like the cool person I am, I wore my chain outside of my shirt instead of inside. My priest levels were out of this world. I paired the shirt with a pair of slim, black pants, cuffed of course and a pair of tan suede chelsea boots. I looked appropriately dressed if the atmosphere was a more casual than formal semi-formal. I walked in to the venue and saw people overdressed and saw people very under dressed, and I fit right in. However, people in sweatshirts and jeans did look a little out of place in the venue. People had glasses of wine in their hands, and boujee detector went off the rails. This is what it's like being upper middle class. Nice.
As for the ballet itself, I was excited. As stated before, I had never seen one. I read the synopsis on my way to the Opera House. Basically, Coppelia is about this one dude who is engaged, and his fiance sees him blowing kisses to this one girl who sits on the balcony of this one house and reads. The house is owned by this weird doctor. So, the guy and his fiance break in and discover that the girl who sits on the balcony is actual a windup toy. Then, the guy and his fiance get married. Yeah, try figuring all of that out through dance without having read the synopsis. I really enjoyed the first two acts, but when the third act came around, I got a little bored. The first two acts actually told the story of Coppelia, but the third act felt like it was them saying, "Okay, let's show off that we can dance now." Even though the first two acts showcased their talents very well. Every single one of those dancers is very talented, especially the lead dancers. I found myself wishing the last person to get on stage would be the last throughout the entirety of the third act. However, overall, it was a great experience, and I would see another ballet for sure. It was fun dressing up and doing something new.
