Life right now - part 7- a reflection on my family and O'Bryant

Today it’s Monday, and honestly I’m a little disappointed I won’t be going to O’Bryant tomorrow. Even after having been there only twice I think I have come to really like the kids and helping them out (even though I don’t really know what I’m doing). It feels good to make a difference. I think that’s what both of my grandparents talked about when I was younger. I continually asked them why they would want to work in a school when that meant HOMEWORK FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! I could not understand why they would want to be teachers, but every time they told me that they liked helping kids acquire knowledge and sharing the knowledge they had about their subjects; they both taught history and Danish. But now I understand, it IS fun, and you feel that little more important when the kid you’re helping looks satisfied and smiles at you with gratitude. I always liked coaching gymnastics and horseback riding, but I don’t think I realized I could also tutor in writing.

Education is very essential in my family, more so than in other families I believe. My grandparents, who basically functioned as parents for me as a kid, were both teachers and were constantly teaching me about Danish literature and world history and correct grammar. And my dad develops online learning programs. So at the dinner table there was usually an extensive debate on proper teaching methods and materials and the means by which kids learn. I feel like I’m slowly getting sucked in. But I don’t mind because it means I get to be part of giving a privilege, which not everyone has, to kids who seem like they are trying to do their best.
