more tutroing

Here we go again. Yay! I need to figure out another five hundred words to talk about. I lost count of how many discussions of my tutoring I’ve already done, so I will discuss it one more time.
This weeks was different from the rest because I was finally working with seniors. These were students in the AP writing course and they were all working on research papers to send in to the AP.
I started off by finding a pair of students to help. I noticed that the seniors tend to hang out in pairs or sometimes groups of three, unlike the younger kids who hang it in big clumps or each completely alone because they’re more awkward and don’t necessarily have as close friends. The pair I helped were two kids sitting at the table on the wall and their names were Kevin and Nan (I don’t know how he’d spell it).
I started off with Kevin because he sat closest to me. I began by asking him what topic was and why he was interested in it. His paper was about plants; specifically, he was examining the difference of planting two plants in one pot versus the standard of one plant per pot and how that effects each plant’s nutrient intake. The reason this was his choice topic is because he seems to have an affinity towards farming and all the science behind it.
Then I went to Nan. His paper was about college students and their finances. He wanted to study the relationship between college students who have previously taken an economics class how well those students have been doing financially. The reason for his interest in this topic was simply because he is a senior ready to go to college next year, and he wanted to have a better understanding about controlling his own finances before he went off.
Nan’s topic kicked off another conversation about college. I asked them if they were willing to share about their college process and if they had any questions that I could help answer for them. Nan proudly said he got into BU, which is awesome and I gave him a fist bump. Soon after Kevin pointed out that we are rivals, and my response was simply, “Ya, fuck BU, but it’s still a good school.” Then I asked Kevin about his process and he said that he unfortunately was still waiting.

In the end, I did discuss with more students and I actually had a lot of fun. This is mainly because most of these students were around my age. Every time I’ve tutored kids at O’Brien before, it’s been with underclassmen, and whenever I tried to talk with them, they seemed quiet, shy, and avoiding my help. With the seniors, I simply introduced myself, and they just started talking and rambling for around ten minutes. Tutoring these students was interesting because it felt like I was just a glorified peer of theirs.
