Blog #8

Rugby season has started. This means that I’m constantly sore and covered in bruises yet again. Just this past Monday I caught a knee to the head and wound up with a scalp contusion- no concussion luckily though. The spring season is super different from the fall season and I’m not completely sure that I’m a fan. In the fall we play 15s which means that we have 15 people on the field at all times, thirty if you count the other team. Our games consist of two 40 minute halves and is much more demanding in terms of strength. However, in the spring we play sevens, 14 people between both teams on the field at all times for two halves of seven minutes each. So the games last about 20 minutes if you include half time and the time between tries in which the clock stops for the conversion and kickoff. Sevens demands more speed and agility than 15s and I’m not so great at that. Another thing I don’t like too much about sevens is that the positions are not as set. In 15s we have specific positions and they play very specific roles whereas in sevens the roles aren’t as clearly defined.

In the fall we play 15s and I am a prop or a lock. This means that I am involved in pretty much every play from kickoffs to scrums to lineouts to regular play. In the spring I am still a prop but there is a less defined role that I play in regular play than in the fall. Anyways I think you can probably tell that I’m not such a big fan of the sevens season. But since rugby has started back up that means that I’m busy again which is good- keeps me from binging too many shows on Netflix, HBO, or getting drawn into the Bachelor drama. It also feels good to be sore again, I forgot how much I missed it. The feeling of pain with close to every movement is amazing and I missed it a ton. Currently, I’m not super wrecked but after our next tournament, I will be, hopefully. It’s a thing of pride for us ruggers J we often compare our bruises, scars, and stories which is always a good time. There are some legends on the team that have continued playing in the game after breaking bones or getting cleated to shreds and I hope to join them someday. Probably not this season but maybe next fall. I don’t think anyone really reads these but if you do and are interested in playing rugby for either the men’s or women’s teams or have a question about rugby feel free to let me know and I can hopefully answer any questions you may have. Also, I played American football in high school and rugby is much more fun so therefore it is the better sport- plus its more entertaining and only has commercials at halftime, not every three minutes.
